Although there
is no cure for Parkinson's disease (PD),
many effective therapeutic interventions
are available to improve patients' quality
of life. A major issue facing clinicians
is the selection of appropriate therapeutic
agents for initial treatment of Parkinson's
disease, as well as management of advanced
disease and complications of levodopa
therapy.
This one-day
course will provide an overview of clinical
manifestations and pathogenesis of motor
complications associated with the chronic
use of levodopa. The phenomenology,
pathophysiology, and treatment approaches
to motor fluctuations and dyskinesias
will be addressed in morning interactive
presentations and afternoon video case
management discussions. Pharmacological
as well as surgical therapeutic strategies
will be reviewed and specific case-management
issues will be explored.
This educational
activity is jointly sponsored by The
Movement Disorder Society (MDS) and
the National Institutes of Health/Foundation
for the Advanced Education in the Sciences,
Inc. (NIH/FAES).
